During our crowdfunding campaign last year we estimated the shipping date of the Nitrokey Storage would be 2 May 2016. As we have previously mentioned, the time-critical aspect of the project is the development of the plastic casing. We have already made three revisions to the design of the casing and this week we received the latest sample of the casing. Unfortunately the casing isn't ready yet which is why we have had to postpone the release date of the Nitrokey Storage to June.

Our crowdfunding campaign is now over and we are pleased to announce that we raised €25,000. A round of applause goes to the 187 supporters who made this possible! The project is on track and we plan to ship the final Nitrokey Storage devices at 2nd May 2016.

An ordinary key file (e.g. GnuPG key ring) can be stolen if your computer is lost or compromised. Using a strong (and usually difficult to remember) password can help unless your computer is infected with a keylogger or if the attacker discovers your password through other means. Nitrokey protects your private keys from being stolen in both instances.

It is common knowledge that passwords will not survive the 21st century, due to their inherent weaknesses (Forbes, Wired, CNET).

You may have heard about BadUSB which is an attack on ordinary USB thumbdrives. The attack exploits the fact that the firmware of ordinary USB devices may not be protected and can be reprogrammed (or “flashed") without any protection. This allows the attacker to infect a USB device by flashing malicious firmware.

Are you curious how Nitrokeys are produced? Did you ever wonder why Nitrokeys are produced in Germany instead of Asia? Our manufacturer answers these and other interesting topics in a video interview (German with English subtitles) which we publish as part of our ongoing crowdfunding campaign.
