A few months ago, we successfully raised nearly €100,000 for the development and production of the NextBox in our crowdfunding campaign. We delivered all pre-orders of the crowdfunding campaign in June and July. Since then, the NextBox can be ordered regularly and will be delivered within a few days. Great thing, this box! What I missed in the description is: a) How much storage for data does the box have by default (or do I have to attach internal or external storage like and HDD/SDD)? b) How can I extend the storage?

Nice product which I am definitely considering buying! Two questions though related to security: how are the TLS keys involved in securing the data on the NextBox protected (are the keys HW protected by any means) ? Can any of nitrokey products be applied to secure the Next box privacy operations?

Hey, generally all files in rest are not encrypted and the TLS certificate you acquire during setup is only used for HTTP TLS communication. Nextcloud mainly benefits from Nitrokey products for the login procedure, one can login securely (using 2FS or password-less) into Nextcloud using a Nitrokey FIDO2 or Nitrokey 3.

Hallo, ich habe 2 kleine Fragen: 1. Ist die NextBox mehrbenutzerfähig? Meint, kann ich z.B. meiner Familie eigene Accounts mit Speicherzuordnung anlegen? Die NextCloud selber kann das ja, aber ich bin mir hier hinsichtlich ggf. vorgenommener Anpassungen unsicher. 2. Benötige ich bei 3 Benutzern 4GB oder 8GB Ram? Leider habe ich da keine Erfahrungswerte, was ausreicht und was nicht.

Hey hey, 1. Ja, die NextBox ist mehrbenutzerfähig, die Nextcloud Installation ist vollständig und entsprechend werden mehrere Accounts/User unterstützt. 2. Das ist in der Tat mehr Last als Benutzer-abhängig, also wie viele Daten wie oft benötigt werden. I.d.R. sollten 4GB aber bei durchschnittlicher "Familien-Nutzung" schon passen, um langfristig sicher zu sein (Nextcloud und Apps werden umfangreicher und die App Bedürfnisse potentiell natürlich auch) sind 8GB natürlich besser.

Sie schreiben:“ Das Betriebssystem Debian wird bis 2026 mit Sicherheitsaktualisierungen versorgt.“ Was passiert danach mit der Hardware? Kann dann auf ein neues OS aktualisiert werden? Wird das aufwändig? Gibt es ihrerseits Unterstützung bei der Migration auf ein neues OS?

LTS (Long-Time-Support) für Debian 10 ist bis 2024, ELTS (Extended LTS) ist dann bis 2026. Wir haben vor auf der gleichen Hardware noch vor dem Ende der LTS Laufzeit auf Debian 11 zu migrieren, das wird weitestgehend automatisch passieren - zumindest ist so unser aktueller Erkenntnisstand.

Hallo, gibt es von Euch eine Empfehlung für entweder die SSD- oder HDD-Variante des internen Massenspeichers der NextBox ? Unterscheidet sich der Stromverbrauch bei SSD und HDD signifikant mit Blick auf die Maximalbelastbarkeit des RasPi ? Oder sollte man die Entscheidung im wesentlichen vom Preis pro TB, max. benötigter Speicherplatz und Geräuschniveau (bei SSD Null) abhängig machen ? Aktuell scheinen ja alle Varianten verfügbar zu sein (so dass das kein Kriterium ist).

Rein funktional gibt es keine Unterschiede, auch der Stromverbrauch ist quasi identisch. Ganz persönlich würde ich natürlich zur SSD greifen, da diese am Ende schon ein wenig schneller ist und natürlich leiser. Geschwindigkeit ist mir persönlich, als jemand der viel mit Technik arbeitet (somit auch üblicherweise mehr Geld dafür ausgibt) natürlich am wichtigsten, also ist die Antwort für mich klar: SSD.

Hey, eine Frage bezüglich der Nextboxsoftware. Bei der Boxshopseite heißt es Updates gibt es bis 2026. Das wären jetzt nur zwei Jahre - wie sieht es denn danach aus? Danke schonmal für die Antwort auch wenn ich nicht weiß, ob ich hier damit richtig bin.

Hey Olly, danke - gute Frage ;) Wir arbeiten jetzt ganz aktuell daran diesen Zeitraum zu erhöhen. Mit der nächsten NextBox Version wird es möglich werden ein "NextBox System Update" durchzuführen, welches dazu führt, dass das Betriebssystem aktualisiert wird und dieser dort angegebene Zeitraum (zunächst für 2 Jahre) verlängert wird. Es wird dazu einen Blog Artikel geben - im wesentlichen planen wir die NextBox möglichst unbegrenzt in der aktuellen Form zu supporten (höchstwahrscheinlich mindestens solange es den genutzten RasperryPI4B geben wird)...
