Nitrokey 3 Test Firmware v1.8.2

We are excited to announce the release of the Nitrokey 3 Test Firmware v1.8.2. This new firmware version represents a significant step forward in our ongoing commitment to enhancing the security and functionality of our products.

Testing Phase Completed

The journey to v1.8.2 required three releases, during which we addressed various smaller bugs. Our team worked diligently to ensure a stable and reliable firmware update. One particularly challenging issue we encountered and resolved was a rare bug originating in littlefs2. We're proud to say that we not only fixed this issue for our firmware but also contributed the solution upstream, benefiting the wider open-source community.

New Features and Improvements

OpenPGP Enhancement

The Nitrokey 3 OpenPGP Smartcard now supports the Bitcoin curve (secp256k1) using the secure element SE050. This addition expands the cryptographic capabilities of the Nitrokey 3, offering more flexibility for users who work with crypto-related applications.

Increased FIDO2 Passkey Capacity

One of the most exciting improvements in this firmware update is the unlocking of the FIDO2 passkey limit. We've previously already implemented a dynamic calculation based on available space and we are now removing the previously enforced upper limit. This change significantly increases the passkey capacity:

  • Nitrokey 3 NFC: Up to 35 passkeys
  • Nitrokey 3A Mini: Up to 100 passkeys

This enhancement allows users to manage a larger number of secure credentials on their Nitrokey 3 devices, further improving the convenience and security of their digital identities.

Update Process

Anyone interested can now try the latest test firmware version using either the Nitrokey App 2 or nitropy, please keep in mind that this is a test release - we don't expect any changes for the stable firmware, but as always do not recommend to use the test firmware in production environments.

Thank you for being part of the Nitrokey community. Together, we're advancing the state of open-source security solutions.
