Once we did the step away from a very specialized (IoT) distribution, the field of possible distribution is very wide. One reason for Debian instead of Ubuntu was clearly the "uncompromised open source" approach Debian goes, which is also stated in the article. But likely heavier weights the fact that we have more experience and know-how in Debian, which for us was a not to be underestimated factor, too.
