NLnet Foundation Supports Nitrokey 3 Storage and FIDO2 Level 2 Certification

We are thrilled to announce two major projects related to our flagship product, the Nitrokey 3. Funded by the NLnet Foundation, these projects aim to improve our offerings and reinforce our dedication to open-source security solutions.

New Generation of Nitrokey 3 Storage

We released the original Nitrokey Storage nine years ago, followed by the updated Nitrokey Storage 2 two years later. Building upon the success of our current model, we are developing the next generation of Nitrokey 3 Storage. The new device will feature increased storage capacity and improved performance while maintaining our commitment to robust security built on top of the Nitrokey 3. We are exploring cutting-edge technologies to ensure this device meets our users' evolving needs in terms of security and functionality. Naturally, the device will be 100% open source, allowing for independent security reviews. We would like to thank the NLnet Foundation, which is partially sponsoring this development.

FIDO2 Level 2 Certification for Nitrokey 3

In parallel, we will enhance the Nitrokey 3 with FIDO2 Level 2 certification, thereby elevating the security of our flagship product. This certification will provide additional layers of protection against various types of attacks, further solidifying the Nitrokey 3's position as a top-tier security key. This upgrade will allow our users to meet the strict security requirements of governments and enterprises. Once again, we thank the NLnet Foundation for funding this project.

Looking Ahead

Although we're enthusiastic about these developments, we want to emphasize that both projects are still in the early stages. We're committed to thorough testing and refinement to ensure the final products meet our high-quality and security standards. This process takes time. Therefore, don't expect results from these projects before 2026.

Thank you for being part of the Nitrokey community. Together, we continue to push the boundaries of open-source security solutions.

"increased storage capacity" = 128, 256, 512 GB?
This is not finally defined yet, definitely the goal is to get towards 256GB or 512GB, maybe there will be variants based on storage space - hard to tell right now - but we'll keep you updated...
Will the NK3 Storage will include a physical keypad ? that would be much better for security
No, this is currently not planned
